ONERA [oh-ner-uh] (Latin) Noun: burden, weight, hardship
In an attempt to grieve in a constructive and cathartic way, after the passing of many close family members in a short time and some tragic emotional events over the course of life; bassist Justin Christian and guitarist Craig Simas found each other at the same point in life. Needing an outlet for the dealings that life handed out, they began writing new music. Drawing from his past writing in Morgion, Keen of the Crow and Dustflow, fresh from the west coast, Justin began crafting new songs with some familiar elements, while trying to bring in newer influences. Meanwhile Craig being a veteran of early 90’s thrash in New England, who since spent years composing his own style of oppressive doom and melodic ambience, helped propel the music writing process. All with intensely personal lyrics, full of imagery and emotion. The songs are a form of musical storytelling. It will take the listener on a deeply personal voyage into the depths of human emotion that we all experience.
A 3-song release titled “Olde” was released June 30 2017, offering 29 minutes of heavy, melodic, dynamic, progressive doom metal with many influences that culminate in a unique sound the band has carved out for itself. All the while building a fanbase among the local scene.
Onera has just completed their full length and is ready to release it into the world. It is even darker, and heavier with more complex arrangements. The addition of John Fadden (formally of Ichabod) as the new vocalist has allowed for more dynamics and better storytelling. The upcoming album titled "Hereafter" also has a guest vocal performance by Anneke Van Giersbergen of The Gathering, Devin Townsend, and Ayreon fame. She lends her angelic powerful voice to an epic 18 minute track.
The band is currently shopping their music to labels.
